According to the construction and housing statistics of the Federal Statistical Office, the construction of new apartments has increased significantly especially since 2002. In the period back to 1980, housing construction reached its absolute peak in 1994 (47,107 new apartments) and its lowest point in 2002 (28,644). After that, housing construction continuously increased. Between 2011 and 2020, between 47,174 and 53,199 new apartments were built annually (except for 2012, when only 43,134 apartments were newly built). Thus, during this period, the record value of 1994 was practically exceeded every year. A portion of the existing apartments is also demolished annually, which slightly reduces the increase of the total housing stock.
