The federal government has stated in its nutrition strategy: meat consumption in Switzerland must decline. And it spends tax money to encourage more meat sales. Both are reality today. You are financing both.
The price of a kilogram of meat at the register never covers what its production costs the society. Environmental damage, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption: These costs are not included in the retail price. They fall on the public. You pay for them on your tax return, not at the register.
Swiss farmers uphold high animal welfare and environmental standards. Cheaper imported meat that ignores these requirements undermines this competition and erodes the market for everyone who does the right thing.
The Federal Assembly is constitutionally obliged to handle petitions. With your signature, these five demands will officially reach Parliament. Sign now.
Stop state advertising for animal products immediately: The federal government ends the financing of advertising for meat, milk, and animal products. While this is still in effect, each state‑financed measure must visibly disclose how much tax money is behind it.
Gradually shift subsidies to crop production: The agricultural subsidies are planned to be shifted from livestock to crop production. No farm should suffer income losses in the process.
Establish cost truth in the meat price: The retail price of meat and animal products must reflect the real societal costs, including environmental and climate-related costs. The calculation basis is established by independent expert bodies.
Introduce import protection for fair standards: Imported meat and imported animal products that do not meet Swiss production and animal welfare standards are subject to an offset surcharge.
Planable reduction of direct production contributions: The direct federal contributions to meat- and animal-producing enterprises are being reduced gradually and in a socially acceptable manner.
