Problem #19
The age verification for using social media carries an often overlooked risk without a good concept: users are forced to share highly sensitive data such as a copy of an ID or biometric data.

The danger is very great that states/politicians who enjoy exercising power (otherwise the politicians would not be in government) will not only use such technical means for their stated purpose (age verification), but soon expand them to block unwanted opinions. For example, one could introduce an age restriction for information from opposition parties or other dissenting viewpoints. This had already been successfully implemented through censorship measures in the corona policy. The SRF even justifies the censorship measures on META with “Meta does too little against harmful content for young people.” Protecting youth from such “false” information could in the future become an application of such an age restriction.

When I think about fundamental framework decisions, I always ask myself: What potential is there to use them for purposes they were not originally intended for?
And from this perspective, I not only agree with you here, but also think further: We are building the basic infrastructure for surveillance. Whether it will be used for that purpose in the future or not, we do not know. But there is a fundamental possibility that it will develop in that direction.
What I would instead focus much more on: Strengthening critical thinking, judgment, intuition of people, and not the attempt to solve this processually / technically.

Knowledge and critical thinking are certainly the foundation – I absolutely agree with you on that. However, we should not just watch and hope that the basic infrastructure for surveillance you mentioned will be built.
