Those who put up with city traffic by car will have their reasons (space, comfort, privacy, time, status, etc.). Monetary considerations are rather secondary.
As a city (or suburban) resident, public transport costs do play a role for me. The motor vehicle is registered and incurs costs whether it is parked or driven (within the city, I mainly ride a motorcycle, so the parking problem does not apply). I think twice about buying an additional ticket because I shy away from the extra costs. The 365 CHF annual subscription for city residents eliminates this consideration - once I have bought it, switching to the bus is logical for occasional city visits.
I still do not give up my individual motor vehicle - for mobility into the agglomeration, I live too unfavorably for public transport.
