In the same period, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the population grew from 7.20 to 9.05 million people. The motorization rate – i.e., the number of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants – thus rose from 495 to 535, an increase of 8%. The FSO emphasizes that the growth of the vehicle fleet since 2000 is primarily due to population growth, which was mainly caused by immigration. Increasing motorization played a lesser role, as the motorization rate has remained largely stable since around 2016 (2016: 543) and has been declining since 2021 (2021: 543; 2024: 535).
