Since the law came into force, according to data from the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), five projects have been definitively approved, another five approved at first instance, and 14 publicly announced. No system is yet in operation. Together, the 24 projects have a planned capacity of 366 MW and could produce around 553 GWh of electricity if built. For comparison: total Swiss electricity production in 2024 was around 76,237 GWh. The alpine solar projects would thus contribute around 0.72% additional electricity. Using 2023 as a reference year, when electricity production was 67,369 GWh due to milder weather influences, the share of alpine solar projects would be around 0.82%. The SFOE points out that there is so far little practical experience with alpine solar systems. Increased requirements due to weather influences and difficult access could significantly increase costs and potentially conflict with landscape protection.
