‍ An apartment is defined as a structural unit with a cooking facility (kitchen or kitchenette) and its own entrance (from outside or from a common area within the building, e.g., a stairwell). According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the number of apartments grew by 1,270,915 between 2000 and 2024. The largest share of this increase (29.6%) was made up of 4-room apartments (+362,175 apartments), followed by 3-room apartments (27.3%, +334,167) and 2-room apartments (18.8%, +230,451). Since no data is available for the years 2001 to 2008, the values for this period were linearly interpolated. The data collection is based on the Building and Housing Statistics (BHS) from 2009 onwards and the Federal Population Census (Census) for the year 2000.
