Saving water? Per person, water consumption has decreased by over 30% since 2000.
The sources of water extraction in 2023 were distributed as follows: 41.4% groundwater, 37.3% spring water, and 21.3% lake water. These figures do not include self-extraction of water by businesses, industry, and agriculture, nor the virtual water consumption resulting from imported products such as clothing, electronic devices, food, or vehicles produced abroad. Households and small businesses were responsible for 55.4% of total water consumption in 2023, making them the largest consumer group. At the same time, this sector recorded the greatest reduction in consumption since 2000. This decline is related to the increased use of water-saving fittings and more efficient technologies in household appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. The reduction in overall consumption occurred despite a steady population increase. Per capita drinking water consumption (taking population growth into account) in Switzerland fell by 30.4% from 2000 to 2023 (from 405 to 281.8 liters per day).
